Hood River New School is a sixth-through-eighth-grade 501(c)(3) nonprofit independent school that embraces interdisciplinary learning in a multi-age classroom. The New School serves 48 students from Oregon and Washington and employs 13 dedicated teachers and staff members. New School was founded in 2021 by a community of parents and educators excited to create a school that honors the critical growth and development window that occurs during adolescence — the transition between childhood and adulthood. We invite you to learn more about the curriculum, staff, and campus locations, and why mixed-age grouping and looping foster a thriving community and promote self-awareness, community responsibility, and integrity.
The rich and rigorous curriculum at Hood River New School is predominantly delivered through the core classes, which cover science, language arts, health, social science, and humanities in an interdisciplinary model. Students spend three years in their core classroom with the same core teacher and classmates. Math is covered as an independent subject and, like all Hood River New School curricula, is not leveled by grade but rather by student ability, allowing students of all ages to explore their capabilities without an age-assigned “ceiling.”
At Hood River New School, we believe that life is interconnected and does not happen in a silo - learning shouldn’t either. Teachers endorsed in multiple subjects model the integration of knowledge needed to engage with the modern world and encourage students to think and live beyond their perceived limitations. At Hood River New School, students draw upon strong foundations developed in reading and writing to think critically and engage more deeply across curricula.
In addition to core classes, students have a rich array of other learning experiences, delivered through our outdoor learning adventure program, electives, extra-curricular clubs, overnight excursions, and field trips. Courses like robotics, sailing, airplane design, and skateboard art give students multiple and ongoing opportunities to expand their horizons and be exposed to new experiences in a challenging yet supportive environment.
